Embracing Digital Dentistry: Inspiring the Next Generation at Clyde Munro

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with the new Vocational Trainees (VTs) at Clyde Munro about my journey into digital dentistry — a field that continues to transform how we diagnose, communicate, and deliver patient care.

I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a group that truly values innovation in dentistry. Tools like Pearl AI (Second Opinion) have completely revolutionised my consultations and patient communication. With real-time AI analysis, I often joke that I now have the most educated patients in Scotland! Watching the VTs’ eyes light up as they saw how AI can generate a full radiograph report in just 15 seconds was a real highlight.

Another game-changing innovation has been the Primescan intraoral scanner, which has transformed treatment planning, consent, and patient engagement — and yes, it occasionally doubles as a screen for Peppa Pig to cheer up a little one 🐷.

A huge thank-you goes to Debbie Tobin and Kirsty Paton from Dentsply Sirona for their ongoing support and dedication to advancing digital workflows in practice.

As someone with a strong interest in Orthodontics, I’ve been especially inspired by how DS Core and Dental Monitoring are enabling true digital freedom. These platforms allow me to plan and track Sure Smile cases remotely, reducing chair time and enhancing the overall patient journey — all while maintaining exceptional clinical outcomes.

We also explored the exciting potential of 3D dentures, Chairsyde, and CEREC CAD/CAM technology. These tools are reshaping dental workflows, improving patient consent, and even making same-day restorations a reality — setting practices apart in an increasingly digital world.

A special thanks to Roy McGillivray for sharing his insights and showcasing how Swift Dental is investing in advanced technology to deliver the best digital prostheses possible.

Finally, it was truly inspiring to hear John Gibson from Canmore Trust speak about the vital role we play in supporting our patients’ — and our teams’ — mental health and suicide prevention. And of course, it was an honour to listen to Jim Hall, whose vision has grown Clyde Munro into Scotland’s leading dental group.

Digital dentistry continues to evolve at an incredible pace, and it’s a privilege to be part of a community that embraces technology, compassion, and continual learning in equal measure.
